Vitamin B12 injections for women at VERAVEE Midlife Clinic in Denver

You're getting enough sleep (or at least trying to), eating pretty well, and doing your best to stay healthy. So why are you still exhausted?

For women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, fatigue and brain fog can become all too familiar.

We often blame stress, busy schedules, or changing hormones. And while those can play a role, there's something else worth looking at: vitamin B12.

Why Do Women Develop Low B12?

Vitamin B12 helps your body make healthy red blood cells, supports your nervous system, and plays an important role in how your body uses energy.

But getting enough B12 isn't always as simple as eating healthy.

Here are four reasons your levels might be low.

1. Your Body May Absorb Less B12 as You Age

Your stomach needs acid to help release B12 from food. As we get older, some people produce less stomach acid, making it harder to absorb this important vitamin.

2. Certain Medications Can Lower B12 Levels

Some common medications, including long-term acid reducers for heartburn and metformin for diabetes, can affect how your body absorbs B12.

3. Your Diet May Not Provide Enough

B12 is naturally found in animal foods like meat, eggs, fish, and dairy.

Women who eat little meat or follow vegetarian or vegan diets may not get enough without fortified foods or supplements.

4. Digestive Conditions Can Interfere With Absorption

Conditions like celiac disease, Crohn's disease, and certain autoimmune stomach conditions can make it harder for your body to absorb B12, even when you're eating enough.

Could Low B12 Be Affecting How You Feel?

Low B12 can cause symptoms that many women recognize:

  • Feeling tired or weak

  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating

  • Low energy throughout the day

  • Changes in mood

  • Numbness or tingling in your hands and feet

Here's where it gets confusing.

These symptoms can also overlap with perimenopause, menopause, thyroid conditions, and other health concerns.

That's why it's important to look at the whole picture instead of assuming everything is hormonal.

How Can B12 Injections Help?

B12 injections deliver vitamin B12 directly into the muscle, bypassing the digestive system.

For women with a B12 deficiency, injections can help restore healthy levels and improve symptoms caused by that deficiency, including fatigue.

Not everyone needs injections. Oral B12 supplements are effective for many people, and injections have not been shown to provide an extra energy boost when B12 levels are already healthy.

The best approach depends on your symptoms, medical history, and whether you have trouble absorbing the vitamin.
